This project to develop a green area and two urban parcels for social housing is located in the north of Castelldefels, around the castle. The competition is based on 2008 planning regulations with the aim of constructing dwellings that are integrated into the urban and natural setting, like living in a park. The proposed volume is divided into two equal units that are separated to generate urban permeability and continuity in the public space. The layout of pedestrian and vehicle access is designed to guarantee the dynamism of the outside space. The heritage value of the historic setting is given a compact, contained configuration to relate with the castle.
The housing brief proposes 70 dwellings, eight per floor, with a central nucleus to optimise the circulation spaces. The typological organisation takes the form of programmatic rings. The inner ring includes the circulation shaft and four courtyards with clothes lines, the wet areas are situated in the central ring, and the bedrooms in the outer ring. The proposed structure is mixed, seeking the optimised performance of each material: below ground, concrete pillars and slab, whereas above ground the structure is timber—lighter, fast to assemble and with a low environmental impact. Passive strategies such as cross ventilation and sun-shading elements at the openings are implemented to reduce the energy demand.
