The project involves the rehabilitation of a disused building in the Raval district of Barcelona to turn it into a music school. It is a long, narrow building that completes the block where the Goya Theatre is located and faces the Tuberculosis Dispensary, a heritage building, as part of the Raval Nord axis of facilities. The proposal responds to the urban nature of the site by laying out entrances on the ground floor and inserting a corridor along the inside of the main façade, leading to the various spaces. This gallery acts as an acoustic buffer between the classrooms and the street, at the same time creating a social space with a visual relation with the city.
As an alternative to the proposal of total demolition outlined in the competition’s conditions of entry, the intervention proposes a selective demolition and the rehabilitation of the rest of the building and the insertion of a structural partition system to house the new functional brief. The central part of the floors is demolished, maintaining the edges and the three façades, which are rehabilitated to their original state. The emptying strategy is complemented by the insertion of a lightweight structure of wooden boxes, acoustic containers that are separate from each other and from the construction elements to guarantee soundproofing for the musical activities.
